It sure seems like the English language, South Korean made, giant monster fantasy film D-WAR has
been in production for years. Wait, it has been in production for
years. Director Shim Hyung-rae has spent the past five years toiling
away on D-War in secret,
teasing us with online tidbits and teaser previews to the point that
many of us began to wonder if there really was ever going to be an
actual film to go along with it. Speculation finally ended last year
when the cast was announced, including Jason Behr (The Grudge, "Roswell"), Robert Forster (Alligator, Jackie Brown), Chris Mulkey (Ghost in the Machine, Weapons of Mass Distraction), Elizabeth Pena (Batteries Not Included, The Incredibles),
and relative newcomer Amanda Brooks. Filming commenced in Los Angeles
(where over half the film is set) this past December with talk of it
being a late 2005 release.
As for the plot to D-War ("D" as in "Dragon", for those unsure):
"Based on the Korean legend, unknown
creatures will return and devastate the planet. Reporter Ethan Kendrick
is called in to investigate the matter, and he arrives at the
conclusion that a girl stricken with a mysterious illness named Sarah
is supposed to help him. The Imoogi makes its way to Los Angeles,
wreaking havoc and destruction. With the entire city under arms, will
Ethan and Sarah make it in time to save the people of Los Angeles?"
But really, this movie is all about the Imoogi, the giant serpentine
dragon that looks like Reptilicus on steroids. Hopefully, D-War will
get right what the American Godzilla got so very wrong.
Watching that teaser, it’s hard to believe this movie was made by the same guy that did that abysmal Yonggary remake (known as Reptilian
in the US) that boasted some seriously amateurish attempts at computer
animation. But then with five years to work on this film, even at a
relatively low budget by Hollywood standards ($15 million is what I’ve
heard), it would be pretty inexcusable for D-War not to look more professional.
D-War was originally scheduled
for release later this year, but due to post-production continuing to
run long and wanting to avoid being in competition with a certain giant
ape movie, an early 2006 release seems more likely. There’s even talk
of a toy line to go along with it.
In the meantime some new footage has finally popped up on the D-War website,
including a rather impressive teaser trailer (mostly a series of F/X
shots with only a few very brief clips of the actors) and a very
interesting English language news story on the film’s production. You
can have a look at them here (NOTE: the site might be a bit slow loading):
