| JAPANESE B-MOVIE DVD ARTWORK AGAIN SHOWS US HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE |
[Dec. 21st, 2008|08:44 pm] |
A good while back I posted a showcase of Japanese DVD artwork for a good many b-movie that are so amazingly superior to much of the crap DVD artwork these films get here in the States. I decided to do it again. All of the DVD artwork you see below are from the Japanese releases of numerous fairly recent Sci-Fi Channel and The Asylum productions - with one exception (top right). Look how gorgeous and eye-catching they are. I despised KOMODO VS. COBRA with every fiber of my being yet the Japanese DVD artwork included below is almost enough to actually make me want to see it again. Why don't we make a game out of this? See how many of the titles you can identify without having to click on "properties" or "save target as" to have it revealed. Some I suspect will be far more obvious than others, especially the ones with the accurate American title printed on it.
I'll post some more nifty Japanese DVD artowork in the coming days.

Just goes to show, American studios haven't got a frickin' clue in the artwork department.

These posters are actually about 1000x better than theatrical one-sheets for real live movies, what with all the photoshopped crap that passes for promo material. I probably would've gone and seen DEATH RACE if the poster was done by one of these guys.
Not only do I wish R2 DVDs looked like this, I wish I could see the versions of these movies that exist in the DVD-artist's heads.

... what on earth is that "Painkiller Jane" artwork promoting??? It can't possibly be the lame TV movie, or the horrible TV series starring Kristanna Loken. It looks more like... like... like an attempt to stay true to the comics books!

Haha. I was immediately drawn to that cover and had to go and look it up on Google and immediatley saw that it was a Sci-Fi movie. The cover actually makes it look ... great.

But it's NOT artwork from the Sci Fi movie! This chick looks NOTHING like Emmanuelle Vaugier, plus - she actually wears the outfit from the comic books!

I dunno... I'd probably be a wee bit pissed off if the cover artwork looked this cool, but the movie itself didn't live up to the promise.

I'm amused that they decided to substitute Nessie with a T-Rex for their DVD art for Loch Ness Terror (labeled "Jurassic Lake" on the cover)

Yeah, that really threw me off. My first thought was "Aztec Rex" or whatever that movie was with the Aztecs and the T-Rex and the conquistadores, but it didn't match at all. They I just figured it was some movie I wasn't familiar with (like "Organizm"...unless that's supposed to be "Monster," which was my guess)...and when I finally looked at the Properties, I was like "What the hell??"
All the posters are great though. And I agree with the thoughts on Painkiller Jane's poster, although she needs more bandages.
