Despite pretty much swearing off The Asylum (with actual swearing, mind you) at the end of my audio review of MONSTER (review), I have decided to go ahead and report the latest Asylum news anyway.
I was rather curious a few days ago when I came across The Asylum's 100 MILLION BC listed on Video ETA for a July 29th DVD release rather than the original March 11th date designed to coincide with the release of Roland Emmerich's 10,000 BC. I knew the film had some behind the scenes turmoil when a hard drive crash lost the locked cut of the film and upon seeing this new release date on Video ETA I found myself wondering if that had some impact on it possibly getting pushed back. Now The Asylum has updated their website to confirm the new release date, although the reason for it is that the Sci-Fi Channel has picked the film up for a summer broadcast premiere. Interesting. You can read my original article about 100 MILLION BC by CLICKING HERE. Also just uploaded to their website is the trailer for WAR OF THE WORLDS 2: THE NEXT WAVE. Starring and directed by C. Thomas Howell, the sequel to The Asylum's first mockbuster co-stars "Kid" of Kid 'N Play and HOUSE PARTY fame and looks to be taking more of an ID4 approach to the material. I will say the trailer makes it look like it'll probably have some fun moments. And then there's KING SOLOMON'S MINES. Oh, I'm sorry; did I say KING SOLOMON'S MINES? What I meant to write was: ALLAN QUARTERMAIN AND THE TEMPLE OF SKULLS You'll be able to rent it on April 29th. Expect more on it in the weeks to come. How about we end this with a sing-a-long? Everyone all together now: Go Street Racer Go Street Racer Go Street Racer, Go! Yep! The Asylum has just announced… STREET RACER "After recovering from a tragic accident, a former street racer struggles to redeem himself and join the elite racing world." But will it be done in the style of a computer animated pastel acid trip? Remains to be seen. May 27th is the street date for STREET RACER. Hold on a sec. Another Asylum film announced? They too are producing a version of Jules Verne's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH to be released on DVD July 1st - no doubt to capitalize on the new 3-D movie version starring Brendan Fraser coming in early July.
But notice there's no Batman, Iron Man, or Hulk knock-offs on the horizon from them? According to an Asylum insider, Asylum honcho David Michael Latt is vehemently opposed to them even attempting superhero movies. Why? Even my source could never figure out why. Personally, I'd love to see them hire a roided-up bodybuilder, paint him blue, and call him THE BULK. I'd be more than happy to pen that script for them. Don't make Deuce Danner sad. You won't like him when he's sad. |
